Helen received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN. At St. Thomas, Helen’s work included a toxicity assessment of groundwater across the National Crude Oil Spill Fate and Natural Attenuation Research Site near Bemidji, MN. One of the lab projects Helen led included measuring the metabolic activity of fish, mammalian, and honeybee cell lines after exposure to various chemicals found in pesticides. After completing her Bachelor’s degree, she traveled down to Alabama to work as a research assistant for Dr. Ann Ojeda at Auburn University.
Her research interests include geohealth and toxicology with an emphasis on informing the public about how the environment may impact their health. Her Master’s thesis is titled “The effect of private well use on cardiovascular disease mortality rates at the census block group level in Alabama”.
